MTG Brewer: U/W Delver

As much as I like to brew up quirky decks, there is really only one deck I would play with when the games start to matter. Unfortunately it is Delver. There are really only two choices in the current metagame, Delver or a deck that can beat Delver. The problem with going with the latter is that Delver is such a flexible deck that there is no single silver bullet for it so hate against it is just a guessing game for the Delver deck of the week.

For example, Delver can easily prepare against all the archetypes that is supposedly good against it. R/G aggro was hailed as the answer but Restoration Angel put an end to that. A lot of people thought that Wolf Run Ramp would be the top dog after Cavern of Souls but many are now realizing it isn’t really that great and the latest version of Delver, Delver Angel crushes WRR by becoming a more controlling deck, using Consecrated Sphinx/ Sword of Feast and Famine for the blow out and a sprinkle of Ghost Quarters to deal with the Cavern of Souls. My brother plays Solar Flare and I actually think it is actually the best deck if you want to beat Delver (the recent results back that up). It basically plays a lot of ones of/ two ofs that are all good against Delver so it is really hard to side in for. For example, many Solar Flare plays 1 Batterskull (my brother plays Wurmcoil Engine) so do you really side in the Divine Offering and/ or the Revoke Existence for it. All in all Delver is insane against a couple of matchups, great against a lot and not too far off from a coin flip for all the rest. Anyways my current Delver deck.

Delver Pike:

4 Glacial Fortress
1 Evolving Wilds
3 Moorland Haunt
2 Ghost Quarter
3 Plains
9 Islands

4 Delver of Secrets
3 Invisible Stalker
3 Snapcaster Mage
2 Geist of Saint Traft
1 Phyrexian Metamorph
1 Restoration Angel

2 Runechanter’s Pike
2 Sword of War and Peace

4 Ponder
3 Gitaxian Probe
3 Thought Scour
4 Mana Leak
2 Gut Shot
4 Vapor Snap

Sideboard:

2 Purify the Grave
2 Revoke Existence
1 Celestial Purge
2 Corrosive Gale
2 Act of Aggression
2 Dissipate
2 Mental Misstep
1 Phyrexian Metamorph
1 Restoration Angel

I’m sure you read a ton of about why Delver decks are OP so I am going to stick with what makes my list different. As you can see it is the older Delver Pike version. I prefer it because it is much more explosive and in my opinion, more fun to play. One of it’s weakness was that is can get some bad draws so I up the cantrips to 10 to iron it out. I admit the mana base is horrible. I don’t really feel like picking up a set of Seachrome Coasts when it is going to cycle out in a couple of months and yet I am super greedy with 3 Moorland Haunts and 2 Ghost Quarters main. But to be honest I haven’t been mana screwed that often. Again the cantrips help a lot.

There has been a debate between Sword of War and Peace and Sword of Feast and Famine. I think there will be a bit more Tokens and Delver decks than R/G aggro and WRR decks. The Phyrexian Metamorph might be a weird inclusion to some especially when everyone is running the cheaper Phantasmal Image but the Metamorph can still be the legend killer while acting as equipment 4.5 coping you own equipment or your opponents.

I have been playing with my sideboard a lot and I recently revamp the whole thing so I am not quite sure if it is optimal yet. But basically I want to change as little as possible game 2 while shoring up some of the weaknesses. I have tried transforming the deck to slower, more controlling mid range deck after sideboard like many have but it just hasn’t performed for me. So instead I typically like shaving off a Thought Scour, 1 or 2 Vapor Snags, 1 or 2 Mana Leaks, the Dismembers and/ or a Stalker (for an Angel or Metamorph) to create slots.
