MTG Challenge: Build A Legacy Deck With Homelands Cards

Homelands is widely considered the worst Magic set ever. To be fair, there is an argument for Fallen Empires but with cards like Hymn to Tourach, Goblin Grenade, High Tide and the pump Knights, it shouldn’t be close. Anyways, I am always challenging myself by restricting the card pool and this may be the ultimate challenge so I would like to see what I (and others) can come up with.

Since you need to play in the Legacy Format to use Homelands cards the question becomes, can you build a somewhat of a competitive Legacy deck using as many Homelands cards as possible. Since as many as many possible is kind of subjective and to give my challenge a bit of structure…

The challenge is to build a Legacy Deck with 1/3 of the 75 cards (60 main, 15 sideboard) from Homelands which means at least 25 Homelands cards which is also roughly 1/2 of the non- land cards. Simple as that. Remember restriction breeds creativity…

To help you (and me out) here is a list of somewhat playable cards in the Legacy format:
Memory Lapse
Merchant Scroll
Primal Order

So that settles it. I am playing some sort of Blue/ Green deck.

UG Homelands:
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Spectral Bears
2 Scryb Ranger
1 Scavenging Ooze

4 Memory Lapse – Great FoW fodder
4 Force of Will
1 Spell Snare or maybe Spell Pierce
4 Chain Stasis

4 Primal Order

4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder

2 Islands
2 Forest
4 Tropical Island
4 Wastelands
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Misty Rainforest

Sideboard:
4 Aether Storm
4 Merchant Scroll
1 Rysorian Badger – Almost a Scavenging Ooze… yea this is not going to be pretty
3 Submerge
3 Surgical Extraction

So this deck plays out like a really bad RUG Delver deck without the burn. It plays a couple of creatures early for the beats and a bunch of Tempo cards to disrupt your opponent. Spectral Bears is still not a bad deal as a 3/3 for 2 but the does not untap unless your opponent is playing black permanents drawback is a problem so I threw in the super versatile Scryb Ranger. Memory Lapse can be like a Submerge in certain matchups and it is the best tempo card in Homelands. Chain Stasis is pretty bad but you need a way to deal with a creatures (at least for one turn). But the real gem from Homelands for Legacy is Primal Order which is like half a Price of Progress every turn. It may be a bit slow but it can punish decks for playing too many non- basics and be the finisher of the deck. Wastelands doesn’t quite work with Primal Order but it is a must in a deck like this.

So that is 16 down and I admit I had to sort of cheat a bit for the rest. Given the parameters, I can just get a bunch of filler in the Sideboard. I tried to avoid it but there is absolutely nothing else worth playing. I considered adding red for An- Zerrin Ruins but that is really, really pushing it and I don’t want to play too many non- basics. Tutors are always useful and you can fetch a counter, a Submerge or a brainstorm with Merchant Scroll. I didn’t put in the main deck because it would just be too slow. In the end, I also used 4 Aether Storms and 1 Rysorian Badger for the last slots. Aether Storm has to be good some where, right? Finally Rysorian Badger a like a Scavenging Ooze and the ooze is SOOOO good. Plus the Rysorian Bader is totally badass. Just look at the art!

I really am interested if anyone can do better. So put on your thinking caps, search Homelands in the Gatherer and post your deck list below!
