Return to Ravnica Brew: Seance Ramp

It is not secret that my favorite card in that last few sets is Seance. It not broken like some combo engines in years past but it is ripe for a bunch synergies and it is a ton of fun to play. I have a number of Seance brews already on this blog but with Return to Ravnica, more specifically the populate mechanic it may finally be its time to shine.

It have seen a bunch of different lists on the same idea, populating the spirits tokens from Seance but the most popular take seems to be a Bant control list. I have two control decks already so I wanted to try some a little different. This one is G/W ramp list.

Seance Ramp:

The Combo:
3 Séance
3 Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage
2 Growing Ranks
3 Thragtusk
2 Wolfir Silverheart
2 Restoration Angel
1 Armada Wurm
1 Angel of Serenity
2 Garruk, Primal Hunter
2 Ulvenwald Tracker

Ramp:
4 Arbor Elf
4 Avacyn’s Pilgrim
3 Farseek
4 Mulch

Lands:
3 Temple Gardens
3 Sunpetal Grove
2 Gavony Township
11 Forests
5 Plains

Sideboard:
4 Centaur Healer
3 Fiend Hunter
3 Triumph of Ferocity
2 Selesnya Charm
1 Acidic Slime
2 Silklash Spider

I want to try the simplest most linear version of the deck. So this list is roughly 1/3 combo, 1/3 fatties for the combo and 1/3 ramp after the lands. Mulch plays both the role as the mana fixer and the self mill enabler. I am still play testing it a bit so the list is a little rough but the power level is certainly there. It is a little non- interactive pre sideboard so often you have to just overpower aggro decks and out value control decks. I also can’t make up my mind which populate card is better Growing Ranks or the Guildmage. Growing Ranks is free after you cast it but it durdles if you don’t have have any tokens lying around and the guildmage is a 2/2 body but 4 to populate is a little steep for Standard.

One card to watch out for is Terminus. It is going to be tough to play around. Centaur Healers are against Rakdos aggro, zombie and burn decks which are sure to be popular. Fiend Hunters are for mid range decks and some control decks with problematic creatures like Olivia, Angel of Serenity etc. Control decks are a problem and I have playing around with Loxodon Smiter but I want to try Triumph of Ferocity out since the control decks out there play very few creatures.

All in all, this should be a fun little deck for Johnnies and Timmies.
