MTG Brewer: More Dragon’s Maze Brews

The Dragon’s Maze Prerelease is just a little more than a week away! The set has a bunch of sweet cards like Beck//Call, Obzedat’s Aid and Nivix Cyclops for all the combo players out there so I have brewing non- stop for like the past two weeks. All my ideas here are unrefined but I just want to throw them out there and get some feedback.

RUG Hyper Aggro:
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Quirion Dryad
4 Nivix Cyclops

4 Artful Dodge
4 Mizzium Skin
4 Thought Scour
4 Unsummon
4 Searing Spear
4 Izzet Charm
4 Armed//Dangerous

4 Breeding Pool
4 Hinterland Harbor
4 Sulfur Falls
4 Steam Vents
4 Islands

Sideboard:
4 Simic Charm
4 Augar of Bolas
4 Pillar of Flames
2 Negate
1 Essense Shatter

This deck can have some explosive draws but you have to take way too many mulligans so I am testing out the right set of spells to make it work. It really needs one more cheap cantrip. RUG Hyper Aggro of course is a bit of an all in deck so there is only so much you can do. Although. there are bunch of cards in the RUG colors to make the game somewhat non- interactive for your opponent.

I also got to refine my Maze’s End deck. It is a ton of fun to play and it goes off turn 4 or 5.

Maze’s End Combo:
4 Arbor Elf
4 Avacyn’s Pilgrim
4 Greenside Watcher
4 Elvish Visionary
4 Elvish Archdruid

4 Thragtusk
1 Hellraiser Goblin
1 Craterhoof Behemoth

4 Abundant Growth
4 Verdant Haven
3 Diabolic Revelation
1 Primal Surge

7 Forest
2 Overgrown Tomb
1 Cavern of Souls
1 Gavony Township
1 Azorius Guildgate
1 Boros Guildgate
1 Dimir Guildgate
1 Golgari Guildgate
1 Gruul Guildgate
1 Izzet Guildgate
1 Orzhov Guildgate
1 Rakdos Guildgate
1 Selesnya Guildgate
1 Simic Guildgate
1 Maze’s End

Verdant Haven with 4 Arbor Elfs and 4 Greenside Watchers for the Mana Blooms in my previous version was exactly what the deck was missing. This is probably the deck I am going to bring to my first FNM where Dragon’s Maze cards are legal. I am not sure about the sideboard through. It has to be permanent based (because of the Primal Surge) and the three things that I need to look out for are sweepers, counters and discard spells. So I was thinking about the new Legion’s Initiative, Curse of Echoes and Witchbane Orb.

One thing about this Maze End deck because of the cantrips you can’t win via Primal Surge into Craterhoof Behemoth because you will die because you can’t draw a card. So you can Primal Surge with one Revelation left in the deck and spin the wheel, Primal Surge after you tutor with Maze End the turn earlier so you can win in response to the draw triggers or just Revelation for the Behemoth and Goblin and a bunch of elves and just win with that.

Finally I have been trying to make an Eggs deck in Standard with Beck//Call. I haven’t found a list that works yet but here is my latest attempt.

Standard Eggs + Beck:
4 Arbor Elf
3 Avacyn’s Pilgrim
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Elvish Visionary
4 Bloodthrone Vampire
2 Blood Artist
2 Hellraiser Goblin

4 Beck & Call

4 Faith’s Reward
1 Immortal Servitude
1 Snapcaster Mage

3 Verdant Haven
3 Abundant Growth

4 Overgrown Tomb
2 Temple Garden
2 Breeding Pool
4 Ghost Quarter
7 Forest
1 Island
1 Plain

It is a whole mess of cards and it still doesn’t chain as reliable as I want it to. Netting mana in each Faith’s Reward/ Immortal Servitude loop is the hardest part. I have explored a bunch of options but the only two that has potential is mana dorks + Hellraiser Goblin and Verdant Haven + Ghost Quarter trick. But unfortunately they aren’t that great at it and they take up a lot of deck slots.

As I type this, I just thought about perhaps working Beck & Call into a Red Token Storm deck. This is off the top of my head and I may be missing something.

Red Token Storm + Beck:
4 Krenko’s Command
4 Thatcher Revolt
1 Goblin Rally

4 Goblin Electromancer
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Battle Hymn
3 Infernal Plunge

4 Reforge the Soul
3 Faithless Looting
3 Beck & Call
3 Past in Flames
1 Burn at the Stake

22 Lands
