Gems of the Game Baseball Trading Cards Repack

I have been super busy gearing up for the fourth of July so this is a quick blog post. I have a Gems of the Game baseball trading cards repack which has 1 graded card (graded 9.0 or higher), 3 fat packs and 3 regular packs. The fat packs are a 2009 UD Baseball Series 1, a 2008 UD Baseball Series 1 Rookie Edition and a 2014 Topps Baseball Series 2. The three other packs are a 2008 UD X Baseball, a 2014 Topps Baseball Series 1 and a 2010 UD Baseball Series 1. That is a lot of baseball cards.

Topps Parallels

I pulled some sort of parallel of Hyun-Jin Ryun (going to my PC) and Jose Abreu (rookie card). I also pulled a Marlon Byrd autograph out of the UD X pack. Sweet!

As for the graded card…

Mike Trout Graded 10

I got a really random Mike Trout base card from 2012 Topps. At least it is graded 10, mint or better.

Random Blaster Break: Gems of the Game Baseball Repack Series 3

I was perusing through the discount blasters at K-mart the other day and I picked up this Gems of the Game Baseball Repack Series 3. It is guaranteed 8 baseball packs and 1 graded card. There are some pretty sweet cards advertised on the box but if you opened enough repacks (like I have), you will know those cards are just a pipe dream.

Gems of the Game Baseball

The baseball packs are:
2007 Topps Chrome
2007 Topps Baseball Series 2
2x 2007 Upper Deck Baseball Series One
2007 Fleer Baseball Retail
2006 Fleer Baseball
2008 Topps Opening Day
2008 Topps Baseball Series 1

Here are some of more notable cards.

Games of the Games Baseball Cards

Wow the rookie sensations design sure was ugly. So for the graded card in the box…

Pristine Alex Rodriguez WBC Card

I got a Alex Rodriguez card. Booooooo…. Alex Rodriguez is just about the most hated man in baseball right now especially now that Ryan Braun has been laying low. The card more specifically is from the 2009 Topps World Baseball Classic set and it is graded a perfect 10 by Global Authority. This set has a Yu Darvish card, right? Why couldn’t I get something sweet like that?

Random Pack Break: Basketball Rookie Graded Cards Series 2

The NBA draft is tonight so I thought I should open something basketball. I actually find the whole business side of basketball (the draft, the salary cap, trades etc) almost as interesting and as entertaining as the games themselves. It looks like this offseason is going to be as crazy as the last few years especially with the Celtics looking to shake things up.

I opened a pack of Basketball Rookie Graded Cards Series 1 not too long ago and I just happen to stumble upon a pack of Series 2.

Basketball Graded Rookie Card Series 2

The lineup for Series 2 is Kobe Bryant, Stephon Marbury, Tim Duncan, Marcus Camby, Keith Van Horn and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. So Series 2 may have bigger stars than Series 1 in Kobe and Duncan but Series 1 has a deeper roster. If all the cards have equal odds, I have 2 in 6 chance of pulling something good with this pack. I just really, really hope I don’t pull a Stephon Marbury.

Mmmm…of course it has to be Stephon Marbury.

Stephon Marbury Gem Mint

Stephon Marbury Gem Mint Back

As a Knicks fan, there are few names I never ever want to hear. Stephon Marbury and Isiah Thomas are up there. I have never seen any superstar in any team be such a diva. Of course, the Stephon Marbury trade is Isiah Thomas’s first big move as Knicks president. Ugh so many bad memories.

I have pulled a number of Stephon Marbury cards so I have quite the collection of cards that I don’t want…

Basketball Rookie Graded Cards Pack Series 1

I have to admit I am kind of a sucker for different, some say oddball, some say gimmicky cards/ packs/ boxes and I probably paid way too much for this pack.

Basketball Rookie Graded Cards Pack

This pack is guaranteed a Graded 9 or 10 basketball rookie card of Chauncey Billups, Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Antoine Walker or Shaquille O’Neal. So basically I am hoping to pull anyone but Antoine Walker.

1996 Collector's Edge Rookie Rage Steve nash Gem Mint

Collector's Edge Rookie Rage Steve Nash Back

I was probably hoping for a Shaq or Steve Nash card the most and I pulled a Gem Mint (graded by World Class Grading) rookie insert card (Rookie Rage) of Steve Nash from an obscure set in the 90’s (Collector’s Edge). I only heard of Collector’s Edge recently when I pulled a random card from the set from a basketball repack. The card itself is SOOO 90’s. It is certainly different and a little oddball. I am actually pretty excited about this pull since again I was so expecting an Antoine Walker card, knowing my luck recently.

Random Blaster Break: Gems of the Game Baseball Repack Series 1!

I have opened a bunch of the Gems of the Game repacks for basketball cards but this is my first go at the baseball version. It contains 1 graded, rookie game used or autographed card and 10 packs.

My 10 packs are:
2007 Topps Baseball Rack Pack
2007 Tristar Prospects Plus
2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces
2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes
2008 Upper Deck Baseball Series One
2009 Upper Deck Icons
2009 Upper Deck O- Pee- Chee
2010 Topps Baseball Update Series
2010 Topps Baseball Series 2
2010 Topps Baseball Chrome

No 80’s or 90’s packs which is a good start. The Chrome cards are really warped which is not.

Cards for my PC which I may or may not have already:

Surprising between the 10 packs, I only got one Met.

Other cards of note:

And for my guaranteed hit I got a mint Deion Sanders “rookie card”. Didn’t Deion Sanders get a 1989 Topps card? Anyways the card overall is interesting, very interesting and one I probably can trade to a Yankees fan.

Overall not bad. It could have been a lot worse. I am not a huge fan of graded cards but given the choice, I think I rather get a graded card of 80’s/ 90’s superstar than a boring jersey or auto card of random players/ prospects.

The Calm-ish Before the Storm

It has been quite a week here in New York City. There was an earthquake (which never happens here) and now Hurricane Irene (which has been said to be the biggest to hit NYC in over 100 years) is coming this weekend. Supermarkets everywhere is packed, bottled water and bread was selling out, the Afro Punk Festival which was being headlined by Janelle Monae, Cee Lo Green and Santigold is canceled, people are being evacuated (which again never happens here) and the MTA subway and bus system is shutting down (which also never happens other than a random strike here and there).

Anyways of course as I do my worst case scenario shopping I had to pick up a couple of random collectibles!

First I got this Gem Mint Prince Fielder Just Minors from the card machine at my supermarket.

I know it is kind of shady. I never heard of Legends Grading Services before and although it can be a play of the light as it reflects the case but I think one of the corners is bent. It has a serial number but it doesn’t have a website to check on it and a google search doesn’t come up with anything. But whatever it was only $2.

Also because I am going to be holed up all weekend I bought a couple of packs of Magic cards, New Phyrexia to be more specific for booster drafts. I actually haven’t played Magic in years but I am super lucky that I have a bunch of friends in the same apartment complex so we can draft and play all weekend. In fact we had our first draft earlier today and my deck isn’t so shabby if I don’t say so myself. It is a red and black deck with a splash of blue for draw spells. It has a ton of removal and a bunch of flyers. Oh and it has these two for kill cards.

That Batterskull is a mythical rare.

I don’t think Irene is going to be half as bad as people are freaking out about but it is better to be safe than sorry, right? For all those in the path, stay safe.
