Random Basketball Packs before the NBA Draft

Today is the big day for the New York Knicks. It is the NBA Draft! I kind of want to open some basketball packs and I could only get my hands on this basketball repack. It has one guaranteed memorabilia card and three basketball packs which happened to be 1 pack of 2012-13 Panini Past & Present and 2 packs of 2012- 13 Panini NBA Hoops.

Panini Cards

I must have overlooked these sets when they came out since these are the first packs of them I have opened. But I wasn’t really missing anything as both are the boring side. And my guaranteed memorabilia card is

Shawn Marion Jersey Card

of Shawn Marion. One thing I hate is when cards are clearly designed to have two maybe more swatches of game used materials and instead they cover up these spots with awkward logos or what not. They look awful and if you are like me, you feel like you are missing out.

So I didn’t really pull anything. Anyways back to the Knicks. I have a bad feeling about the NY Knicks’ future and I have little faith in Phil Jackson’s ability to build a competitive team. I also have a feeling it will be another Stephen Curry situation. The Knicks were one pick away from picking Curry and instead we had to settled for Jordan Hill. Ugh. I wish I have more reasons to be optimistic about the Knicks. I guess you need a wait and see approach as a fan and I hope Phil Jackson proves all his doubters wrong.

2013- 14 Panini NBA Hoops Box Break

I picked up this box of 2013- 14 Panini NBA Hoops on Black Friday. Of course I got a couple of Panini Black Friday packs and did OK with them. Anyways if I am not mistaken, NBA Hoops is Panini’s basketball flagship set and there are a ton of cards per box so it is perfect for team collectors looking to add cards to their PC. Here is a small sample of cards I pulled.

2013-14 Panini NBA Hoops Cards

As expected there are a ton of base cards with a bunch of parallels and inserts sprinkled in. I am probably most excited about pulling three different Tim Hardaway Jr rookie cards between this box and the Black Friday packs. It goes without saying the Knicks are one of the worst team in the NBA this year and Tim Hardaway Jr is one of the few bright spots. Of course he gets almost no playing time…

Oh I did some research and the Kobe’s All- Rookie Team inserts are appartently one of the chases of the set. If someone pulled a Tim Hardaway Jr Kobe’s All- Rookie Team insert I would be defintely interested in a trade. I also don’t think I pulled the one per box Artist’s Proof parallel. I went through the cards a couple times and didn’t see it but since all the parallels look alike it is remotely possible I keep missing it.

Each box has 3 hits, 2 autographs and 1 memorabilia card. I took a look at the autograph checklist and there are 200 signers in this set but if you take a closer look, there is actually a lot of filler for the lack of a better term. Here are my pulls.

John Lucas III Autograph

A John Lucas III auto. To be honest, I actually had to google who he was and wow I can’t imagine too many John Lucas III fans out there looking for an auto of his.

Rory Sparrow Autograph

My other auto is of Rory Sparrow. The name sounds familar but I had to Google who he was too. Needless to say Rory Sparrow had a much more accomplished career compared to John Lucas III (so far to give the benefit of the doubt). He is picture on the card as a Knick so he is going to my PC.

Manu Ginobili Jersey Card

The last hit is Manu Ginobili jersey card which to be honest doesn’t really excite me too much. Actually overall my pulls have been lackluster for this box break other than the Anthony Bennett Kobe’s All- Rookie Team insert. Oh wells, you can’t win them all.

Another Go at a Fairfield Basketball Repack

I decided to have another go with one of these repacks.

Fairfield Basketball repack

It has one guaranteed memorabilia card and three packs. For my three packs I got a 2008 Press Pass Basketball, 2007-08 Topps Basketball and Skybox Inaugural Edition.

My Press Pass Pack:

2008 Press Pass

An interesting pack with Kevin Love’s card standing out. The DeVon Hardin card is a reflectors parallel. The other two packs are honestly not worth mentioning or scanning. I have so many 2007-08 Topps Basketball packs that I pulled most of the cards several times over and the Skybox pack is one of the defining sets of the junk era.

For my memorabilia card…

Carmelo Anthony Mem Card

I actually pulled a pretty sweet one. Carmelo Anthony. I own a Carmelo Anthony autograph but I actually never own a Carmelo Anthony memorabilia card. Plus it is from one of my favorite sets 09-10 Panini Court Kings. Sure it is a memorabilia card of Melo as a Nugget but I’ll take it.

Basketball Repack Break: 5 Packs, Loose Cards and One Game Used Card

The Knicks are having a historical season. The team is firing on all cylinders (OK maybe they had a few setbacks) and I am 100% they can go all the way! Honestly it has been awhile since I have been excited about any of the New York teams.

Anyways, I haven’t been able to swing by my local card store in awhile so I have been picking up a bunch of repacks lately. As always it is hit or miss but in general they are fun breaks. I picked up another repack the other day, this time I figure to get some basketball cards. At the very worst I got a new box to store some of my cards in.

Basketball Repack

This repack makes a bunch of promises. Packs, over 20 loose cards with 1 of the loose cards guaranteed to be of a star player (Wade, Melo, Kobe, Garnett, Duncan or LeBron) and one game used card. For $10, why not?

Here are a couple of the loose cards

Some Basketball cards

A lot of the loose cards are rookies of bench players, cards from college sets like Sage, a few cards from Michael Jordan sets and random base cards of stars and starters. There was also one one 1979 Topps cards. It was actually a lot better than I was expected. But this is the card that draw my attention.

Charles O Bannon Edge Energy

It is a Charles O’ Bannon Edge Energy insert. It comes from 1997/98 Collector’s Edge Impulse Basketball, which must be a very obscure set because I have never seen or heard of it. It kind of like a cheap Sportflics card and I just love oddball cards. It is going to be an interesting addition to my collection.

The game used card is of Caron Butler.

Caron Butler Game Used

The packs:
2006 Press Pass Basketball
2005-06 Upper Deck Basketball
2006-07 Upper Deck Basketball Fat Pack
2006-07 Upper Deck Reserve
2007-08 Upper Deck First Edition

Some of cards worth mentioning from the packs.

A Couple More basketball cards

One of the Kyle Lowery cards is 261/500. I also pulled a college rookie cards of Raymond Felton. Other than that I didn’t really pull much which is to be expect from those packs.

2010- 11 Panini Classic Blaster Break

I bought a dusty 2010- 11 Panini Classic Blaster for that slight chance of pulling a Jeremy Lin rookie card. Apparently I seemed to have mixed up Panini products (since you know they all feel the same) and I should have been looking out for Panini Prestige blasters to get a Jeremy Lin rookie card. Despite John Wall on the box, Panini Classic is definitely not a product for rookie cards at least the retail packs. I looked it up and I believe Jeremy Lin only has a rookie autograph card in the set so the odds are astronomical to pull any Jeremy Lin cards in this blaster.

Base Cards:

So in the end, with 10 card per pack and 8 packs per blaster I pulled not a single rookie card and pulled only one insert. That insert is not really an insert either, it is a preview card for another product Hoops. It is of Blake Griffin though so that is something and it is interesting I pulled the Knicks Big 3 but all in all a boring break but it did remind me why I hate (maybe that is too strong of a word) Panini products.

Anyways, I am super excited about the Knicks offseason. Going in the offseason, given the salary cap restrictions, the Knicks could have very well lost Jeremy Lin, Landry Fields, Steve Novak and JR Smith but they managed to resign all but Landry Fields. Best of luck to Fields BTW. He wasn’t the most popular player last year but he was in a tough spot with Melo changing the offensive flow of things but he never stopped hustling. The Knicks of course also added two veterans Jason Kidd and Marcus Camby, filling holes in the team. They are both getting up their in age and are signed for three years each so it can backfire but I think they are great signings especially given the huge shift in the East. The Nets despite overpaying for just about everyone are now a threat, the Heat is only getting stronger, Chicago with a healthy Derrick Rose is still one of the most dangerous team in the NBA etc. If I had to draw the lines, I think the Heat and the Bulls are going to be top dogs in the East. I may be biased but the Knicks should be right up there. The Nets if they get the Howard trade to work out should round out the top 4. The Pacers, 76ers, the Celtics, the Magic if they keep Dwight Howard and maybe even the Hawks should contend and there is a huge drop off after that. Should be a fun season.

It Was Only A Matter of Time: Upper Deck World of Sports Blaster Break

So it was either another blaster of American Pie or a blaster of World of Sports. I should have gone with American Pie…

For anyone who opened enough World of Sports packs, you are probably like me. Every box/ blaster/ pack you opened you keep saying to yourself please no lacrosse, please no lacrosse, please no lacrosse. I have been lucky in the past but I guess it was only a matter of time.

The Base Cards:

The only card I really want is the Black Widow Jeanette Lee. John Starks is going with all my Knicks cards and I got a Gauntlett Eldemire base card to go with his autograph.

So for my only non- base card in the blaster, it is a hit and it is of Brodie Merrill…

… a lacrosse player. To be fair, I wikied him and he a good probably one of the greatest lacrosse players ever to play but the fact is there aren’t many lacrosse collectors in the world.

2007- 08 Upper Deck SP Basketball Blaster Break

I have a little blast from the past, back when Upper Deck was hmmmm how should I put it, relevant. It is a blaster of 2007- 08 Upper Deck SP Basketball. Of course, the SP line was probably Upper Deck’s strongest brand.

It is interesting that I got a bunch of Knicks from the 2006-07 team which usually is a good thing but it is just a reminder how much that team sucked. I can’t stand to see Stephon Marbury in a Knicks jersey. Something like $25 million to stay home and bicker all day, ugh.

Anyways some of the shots Upper Deck chose was interesting like say this Amare card.

I guess I can only speak for the SP Basketball retail but from the break all in all I think the set is a bit monotonous. It really needs a bit more inserts to break up the waves of beige. The inserts I did pull just seems like derivatives of the base set.

On a slight tangent, does anyone know if basketball cards from 2007- 08 were overproduced? I still see I tons of them for from sale usually half off and in repacks more so than other years.
