MTG Brewer: Dragon Stompy for Modern

Modern season is fast approaching. Looking to attack the Modern meta at a different angle? Try this deck I have been playing around with.

Dragon Stompy:

4 Blood Moon
2 Magus of the Moon
3 Chalice of the Void
2 Fulminator Mage
2 Avalanche Riders

4 Anger of the Gods
4 Draconic Roar
2 Dismember

4 Thunderbreak Regent
3 Stormbreath Dragon
2 Chandra, Pyromaster

4 Simian Spirit Guide
3 Desperate Ritual
2 Gemstone Caverns
19 Mountains

Dragon Stompy

3 Relic of Progenitus
2 Ingot Chewer
1 Boil
2 Combust
2 Spellskite
1 Fulminator Mage
2 Pyroclasm
1 Chalice of the Void
2 Dragon’s Claw

Dragon Stompy is a old school Legacy deck that didn’t really translate to Modern because the lack of Sol Ring lands. You can still get a turn 1 or 2 Chalice of the Void and/ or Blood Moon with Simian Spirit Guide, Desperate Ritual and Gemstone Caverns though (but probably not as reliably). After you get the soft lock in, it really doesn’t matter how you win the game. I like the dragons package because because the dragons can sort of protect themselves. Also since you don’t want to play Lightning Bolt in deck (since it can be lock out with a Chalice on 1), it makes Dragonic Roar a bit more attractive to play.

I was getting board with Zoo, Burn, Living End and Tron so this deck was a breath of fresh air to play.

MTG Brewer: Little Tribal Zoo in Modern

For the record, I am a fan of the latest bannings and unbannings by Wizards for the Modern format. It should make way for new decks to emerge as top tier. Maybe something like…

Little Tribal Zoo:
4 Wild Nacatl
4 Kird Ape
4 Goblin Guide
4 Steppe Lynx
2 Grim Lavamancer
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager
4 Path to Exile
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Tribal Flames
3 Lightning Helix

4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Marsh Flats
2 Arid Mesa
2 Stomping Ground
2 Sacred Foundry
2 Temple Gardens
1 Watery Grave
1 Forest
1 Mountain

Tribal Zoo

I was anticipating Wild Nacatl to be unbanned so I was actually brewing a list and gathering the cards I needed. The one card I don’t own is Tarmogoyf so I went with a little zoo deck focused on one drops to negate its absence. This deck is pretty simple. Swarm the board with one drops and finish off the game with burn. The mana base of this deck costs an arm and a leg and there really isn’t a substitute. But if you have the fetches and shocks already this pretty much a budget deck. Only non land rare is Grim Lavamancer.

I honestly don’t play Modern much so I don’t really know how to build the sideboard. I think Pod, Splintertwin and graveyard base decks are some of the harder matchups so I think I will start with something like this.

3x Skullcrack
3x Combust
3x Pillar of Flame
3x Qasali Pridemage
2x Rest in Peace
1x Illness in the Ranks

Combust is for Splintertwin and Pillars are for Pod. Qasali Pridemage should be good against Affinity and Pod and I will probably sub in them in for BTE’s for any Pyroclasm based deck. Scavenging Ooze is probably the popular choice for graveyard hate but it does die to removal and it is a little mana intensive. Instead, Rest in Peace should a nice surprise factor. Skullcrack is probably the weakest sideboard card but I see it going in against Soul Sisters and Tron just for Wurmcoil Engine. Finally Illness in the Ranks is a cute one of that I want to test against Lingering Souls and the Bitterblossom.

The deck may be a little rough around the edges but I am going to give it a test run at a GPT this weekend. That is if there isn’t a yet another ridiculous blizzard on its way…

Update: Played the Zoo deck at the GPT and I would probably make these changes -4 Steppe Lynx for +4 Experiment One and maybe -1 Temple Garden for +1 Stomping Grounds. This deck doesn’t really need the variance of Steppe Lynx. When it is good it is insane and when it is bad it is really bad. It also leaves you open to cards like Electrolyze and Pyroclasm. I want to try Experiment One in its place to make the mana a bit better and make crazy Burning Tree Emissary chains more insane.

Magic: The Gathering Box Break – Zendikar

For my first box break of 2013, I picked up a box of Zendikar. I have been hearing whispers that Star City may drop Legacy in their Open Series and it is no secret that Wizards has been trying to push the Modern format. I love Legacy but I don’t think I want to invest to much in that format so instead I will aim to pick up some Modern staples. A box of Zendikar should be a good start. I paid $150 for it and hope to make my money back.

Zendikar Box

The primary draw to Zendikar is the fetch lands. It has been confirmed that they won’t be reprinted in Modern Masters and it is one of the pricer Modern staples. (Sorry for the blurry pics but it seems that my scanner does want to cooperate with me today.)

Zendikar Fetchlands

It is interesting that I pulled another Verdant Catacombs. I have like 9 Catacombs now. Not that I am complaining but I still haven’t pulled a Misty Rainforest (the most valuable of the fetch lands).

The other draw is the full art lands and a box is pretty much guaranteed 36 of them. They run about $1 each so that is $36 right there.

Zendikar Full Art Lands

So are some other Modern staples. I really needed the Bloodghast.

Zendikar Modern Staples

I also got a couple of good Commander cards like Oracle of Mul Daya, Oran- Rief, the Vastwood and Sorin Markov, a couple of good foils like Emeria Angel, Punishing Fire and Blade of Bloodchief and a couple of good uncommons like Hedron Crab. They are all worth $1- $3, some maybe a tad more. So all in all I about made my money back and boosted my Modern collection, just before Modern season and it was definitely a fun break, especially that I got a game of sealed in with the box.
