I have a truly random pack break this time around. This is a pack of ASPCA Pets & Creatures trading cards!
Each pack comes with 9 cards, 2 of them being special cards. The special cards I pulled are a gold parallel of a somali and a really cool “feels like fur” Himalayan rabbit. Besides being super cute, there are also fun facts of each animal on the back of the cards. But the best part is a percentage of the price of the pack goes back to ASPCA!
I don’t really collect politicians’ autographs but I recently got this Elizabeth Warren book signed and this Kirsten Gillibrand book signed for only $1! I figured they have to be worth more than that.
I got the Elizabeth Warren signed book by helping out a friend donate a ton of books and I stumbled upon the Kirsten Gillibrand signed book in the $1 section of a used bookstore near where I work.
Anyways, New York Comic Con is right around the corner and I got my tickets! I hope to pick up some interesting autographs this year to add to my collection. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will be signing but their autographs will definitely cost more than a dollar…
I saw a 2014 Panini Golden Age blaster for sale at K-Mart and it was a no brainer. Panini Golden Age follows the Allen & Ginter formula by having an eclectic mix of cards so it seems like a box break would be a lot fun. Here are my pulls.
This was a really good blaster with two hits. Every blaster is guaranteed an exclusive Legends of Music relic card and I pulled Liberace. Weird. I love the fact Joey Ramone got a card in the set and with a little digging I found out I could have pull of relic of his in the same insert set. I was surprised I actually pulled an autograph out of this blaster too. I am not too familiar with Jorge Velasquez career but he seems to have a storied history. The sticker stamps inserts are seem like a neat idea but it not really something I collect.
Finally there seems like a millions different backs for the mini cards. I think the Smith’s Mello- Mint parallel is one of the rarest of the bunch and I got one with Mark Koenig. The rest of the top row are Hindu backs and the bottom rows are Mono backs.
I wished I knew more about Panini Golden Age when it first came out. I like Panini Americana and this set is way better. It looks like Panini actually put some effort in it. All in all, this set is right up my alley and I would definitely pick up more blasters or boxes if I ever come across it.
So I saw the latest Star Wars movie and I know it has mixed reviews but I thought it was awesome! I also saw boxes of 2015 Topps Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens on sale for $80 in my local hobby stores so it was a no brainer that this should be my first box break of 2016!
I should have enough cards in one box to complete the base set. I need to find the time to organize it. There were also a ton of parallels and inserts but a bunch of the inserts were doubles and even triples. For example, I pulled 3 of the Flametrooper foil insert cards. Anyways here are the pulls and the hits.
I got a numbered foil parallel /150 of Yoda and autographs of Bai Ling (didn’t know she was in Star Wars) and of Nika Futterman.
Not bad. Can’t complain about pulling two autographs in a box. I was sure after pulling the first autograph that the other hit was going to be a manufactured patch card.
Wow times flies. I remember when I bought a box of Allen & Ginter when first came out and it has been 10 years since. After all these years, Allen & Ginter is still one of the most fun sets to break. I am not going to stop this year so I have a hobby box of 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter 10th Anniversary Issue.
First off the box topper.
Jorge Soler, not bad. Here are a bunch of cards from the box.
A fun set as usual. I especially dig the Rocky cards. Another staple of Allen & Ginter sets is the tons of different inserts, variations and minis.
I have to double check but I don’t think I got any super rare variations or parallels and my buyback cards are pretty lame.
Each box has three hits and I got
a jersey card of Josh Hamiliton
a jersey card of Bryce Harper
and the big hit of the box, an autograph of Archie Bradley. The hits aren’t bad but I was hoping to pull some oddball cards.
All in all, another home run by Topps. Before I throw anything away do I need to know about anything about the set like random cards hidden in the box, unannounced super rare inserts, random wrapper redemptions, etc?
I was at Target the other day and I saw some loose packs of 2015 Panini Americana retail. Americana was one of my favorite sets back in the day and I didn’t even know Panini came out with a new set. So let’s take a look.
Wow these cards have such a boring, uninspired design. A grey border on cards almost never works. The back is a bit better. The top looks a bit like an American flag which I am sure is no accident. I have to admit though the checklist of actors, actresses, musicans etc is a lot stronger than the Donruss counterpart. There are a lot more names I recognize right off the bat.
As for my pulls, I pulled a Eva Marie red parallel, a Tiffani Thiessen die cut On the Tube insert and a Jerry Bailey & D. Wayne Lukas Winner’s Circle Combos insert. Everything else is just base cards. Of the three, the Eva Marie card is probably my best pull and the red parallel looks like it is just design for her.
Despite the boring design for the base cards, I probably will be looking to pick up a hobby box to see what else is in 2015 Panini Americana.
I managed to clear my schedule to make my way to Atlantic City for Atlantic City Boardwalk Con last weekend. Atlantic City Boardwalk Con is a new comic con (this is their first year) and it is sort of like New York Comic Con lite. New York Comic Con is still the go to event in East Coast (I got my tickets already!) but there is something nice about able to comfortably shop and to be able to actually move around the aisles. Anyways, I picked up a bunch of stuff.
First, I picked a sweet Doctor Who theme box for my Commander deck and I picked up this Agent Coulson Heroclix figure I needed for the team I wanted to build (based on the TV show Agents of SHIELD).
I also got this Adventure Time comics signed by Travis J Hill and this watercolor of Snoopy and Woodstock as Batman and Robin by Jeff Shultz.
You know have to open some packs and I picked up this Donruss Americana II blaster. It is one of my favorite non- sport sets ever. I especially love the Ring Kings inserts. It is one of the first MMA cards in the market and I have been trying to get my hands on as many of these cards as I can. Lucky for me I pulled a Ring Kings card I don’t have yet. Nice!
It seems that I can’t resist mystery grab bags and I got some weird Japanese action figures and a good pack for a future blog post in mines. Finally, the Zenescope board game Wonderland has been on my radar for some time now and it was only $10 at their booth so I thought to give it a shot.
All in all, Atlantic City Boardwalk Con is a lot of fun and I look forward to making my way there again next year!
